Additionally, solid tumors, immunodeficiency diseases, and certain genetic disorders may necessitate a bone marrow transplant to restore normal marrow function.


Types of Bone Marrow Transplants

There are two primary types of BMTs: Allogeneic and Autologous. In an Allogeneic transplant, the patient receives donor marrow, which may come from a family member or an unrelated donor. On the other hand, an Autologous transplant involves using the patient's own previously collected and stored stem cells. The choice between these types depends on various factors, including the patient's condition and the availability of suitable donors.


Procedure and Recovery Process

During a bone marrow transplant, the patient receives the new stem cells, which then engraft in the bone marrow and begin producing normal blood cells over time. This process, known as engraftment, typically takes weeks to months. Following the transplant, close medical monitoring is essential, including regular blood tests, potential hospital stays, and transfusions as needed. Patients may experience complications such as infection, bleeding, and transplant rejection, which require careful management.
